Beverly Smith Fenner was born in Marshall Township on August 12, 1926, the daughter of W.A. Bert Smith and Doris Barrett Smith.
She graduated from Marshall High School in 1944, the Valedictorian of her class.
She spent all her life working with people. She began her career during World War II working at the Agriculture Acceptance Agency, and from there went to the Farmers Home Administration.
The Highland County Fair had not been held for many years. A group of interested men decided to try to revive it in 1947, so they asked her to be the secretary. She went all over the county selling advertising, put together the fair book, took all the entries and paid all the premiums. Livestock and other displays were housed in tents, but it was successful and continues to this day.
She then worked for Highland County Children Services, and in 1952, began working for the Highland County Aid for the Aged, now known as the Ohio Department of Jobs & Family Services. In 1992, she retired after 43 ½ years of dedicated service.
She was a lifetime member of the Marshall United Methodist Church. She had a faithful commitment to the Church, and served in many different capacities within the Church.
In 1996, she was inducted into the American Association of University Women?s Hall of Fame, honoring outstanding achievements of Highland County Women.
She was a 33-year member of the Hillsboro Order of Eastern Star, and served as Worthy Matron in 1976. She was also a 33-year member of the Order of White Shrine of Jerusalem, and served as Worthy High Priestess in 1975 and 1978 of Hillsboro Shrine.
She was a member of the Hillsboro Women?s Club and served as President in 1996 and 1997.
She is survived by her mother, Doris Barrett Smith.
She is also survived by her husband, Clifford R. Fenner, whom she married on October 14, 1978.
Two daughters survive: Dinah James Phillips; and Vicki Jeff Rhude. Five Grandchildren: Michelle Andrew Cimis; Mark Jamey Phillips; Melanie Hall; Julie Mitch Roberts; and Joe Rhude. Eight Great Grandchildren: Lauren Cimis; Kaitlyn & Connor Phillips; Phillip & Brooke Hall; Jordan, Zachary, & Hayley Roberts.
Two sisters: Aileen S. Githens, of Richmond, Indiana; and Jeanette S. Williamson, of Keokuk, Iowa; sister-in-law, Madonna Ralph B. ?Pat? Smith; brothers-in-law, Dennis Mary June Thompson; and Byron Nancy Wisecup. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her father, W.A. ?Bert? Smith, brother, Ralph B. ?Pat? Smith, and great granddaughter, Mallory Nicole Roberts.
Visitation will be Saturday, May 15, 2004 from 4:00 till 8:00 P.M. at Hope Miller-Thompson Funeral Home in Hillsboro, with Eastern Star Services at 8:00 P.M. Saturday. The body will lie in state at the Marshall United Methodist Church from 1:00 P.M. till time of service at 2:00 P.M. Sunday. Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, May 16, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. at the Marshall United Methodist Church.
Internment will be in the Dunn?s Chapel Cemetery.
