Dennis Lee Butler

Dennis Lee Butler, 76, of Hillsboro, passed away Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018.

Dennis was born in Dayton, Ohio on June 27, 1941 to the late Ewell (Tom) and Mary Lois (Murray) Butler. He graduated from Whiteoak High School in Mowrystown, Ohio and then served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1963. Dennis was a tank crewman for most of his service while stationed in the Federal Republic of Germany during the Cold War.

He is survived by his wife, Dorcas Ann Lykins, whom he married on Dec. 30, 1961. They were married at Sugartree Ridge Church of Christ where they both served for many years as Sunday School teachers, Loyal Couples members, deacon and elder. More recently both became members of the Hillsboro Church of Christ.

Dennis held many jobs during his working life that included; cowboy and ranch hand, soldier, machinist, truck driver, dairy farmer and insurance agent. He was a board member and President for 13 years of Developmental Disabilities (DD), and recently enjoyed volunteering for the 937 Food Pantry. Dennis also supported the youth 4-H livestock and butter auction at the Highland County Fair for many years.

Dennis and Dorcas raised four children. He is preceded in death by one son, Bruce David (died 1986) and is survived by his other children, their spouses and families. Their daughters Vicki Lee (married to James L. Butler III; children Laura and Christopher), Karen Jo (married to Darren T. Kessel; children Nicholas and Elizabeth) and son Robert Dennis (married to Megan E. Brockey; children William, Caroline and John) miss their father, father-in-law and Papaw very much. Dennis is also survived by his brother Tim (Anna Jean) and sisters Patty, Beverly (Bob Leonard), Sharon (Raymond Barnes) and Annie (Bob Hayslip).

Visitation will be on Friday January 12th from 11 AM to 1 PM with a memorial service immediately following at the Thompson Funeral Home in Hillsboro, OH. Burial service will immediately follow at the Sugartree Ridge Cemetery. A gathering of family and friends at the Hillsboro Church of Christ will immediately follow the burial service.
