Dewey Anderson Thackston, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Pastor, Missionary, Teacher, Writer, Musician, went home to be with his Savior on March 13, 2011.
His over 50 year ministry touched the lives of people across the country and in Canada, Europe and Asia.
Dewey was born in Mason County, Kentucky November 15, 1937 to Anderson and Ella Hord Walker Thackston.
He graduated from White Oak High School in Mowrystown, Ohio as Valedictorian. A Timothy of Sugar Tree Ridge Church of Christ, Dewey attended and graduated from Cincinnati Bible Seminary in 1959 where he served as Class President his Senior year. He also attended Goethe Institute, Universitaet Wien, Fort Hays State University, and Niagara School of Broadcasting.
He was married to Barbara Lee McElroy who went before him into glory in 1997. He is survived by his children Jeffrey Allen Thackston of O'Fallon, MO, Colonel John Michael and Joellen Seyfreid Thackston of Tucson AZ, Joy Melinda Thackston and Tim Snell of Appleton WI; grandchildren Lindy, John, Kyle, Colin, Tyler, Shelby, and Bailey. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Ronald Thackston, Allen Thackston, Barbara Thackston Rendell and Evelyn Thackston, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Dewey served as evangelist/minister at churches in Dry Ridge, KY; Hays, KS; Tulsa, OK; Plainfield, IN; Olney, IL; Neapolis, OH. His other ministries included time as a missionary in Niagara Falls and Toronto, Canada and behind the Iron Curtain with TCM International, living with his family in Vienna, Austria. Dewey was Campus Minister at Bowling Green State University with Active Christians Today. In addition to his service in local churches, Dewey was an internationally renowned vocalist and worship leader serving among others the North American Christian Convention and National Missionary Conventions. He pioneered a radio news program in Niagara Falls, NY called Crossfire. This program would bring the issues of the day to light pitting leaders from both sides to come together to discuss their differences on his Sunday evening forum. This program was both controversial and groundbreaking for its day. While in Canada Dewey was the editor of the Canadian Christian Harbinger. Among his other ministries he was member on many boards and advisory committees for church and missionary organizations including the Philippine Mission Churches of Christ, Central Luzon.
Funeral service will be held 10:00 A.M., Friday, March 19, 2011 at the Sugar Tree Ridge Church of Christ, 2240 St. Rt. 136, Hillsboro, OH..
