Eugene C."Gene" Hopkins, 87 years of Hillsboro, died Thursday, December 15, 2005.
He was born at Elmville, Ohio on July 27, 1918 the son of the late Harley and Verda Rhoads Hopkins. Beside his parents he is preceded in death by four brothers, Archie, Cecil, Burch, and Clarence Hopkins, and one sister, Emma Hopkins.
Gene was co-owner and operator of Smith-Hopkins Lumber Company in Hillsboro for 45 years. He was an U.S. Army Veteran of WW II, life member of the VFW Post #9094 Hillsboro, Highland County DAV, Hillsboro Elks #361, The 4th Armored Association, and a Kentucky Colonel. He is survived by his wife, Joanne Smith Hopkins whom he married on October 4, 1946, one son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Jackie Hopkins of Hillsboro, two daughters and sons-in-law, Diana and Donnie Carey of Hillsboro, Debbie and Jim Penn of Cincinnati, one brother, George Hopkins of Hillsboro, seven grandchildren, Tobi Clinton of Cincinnati, Tammy Carey of Cincinnati, Janice Jeff Rulon of Wilmington, Mary Jo Penn of Cincinnati, A.J. Penn of Cincinnati, Tiffany Hopkins of Hillsboro, Kristy Hopkins of Hillsboro and one great grandson, Dakota.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 19, 2005 at 2:00 P.M. at the Thompson Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Burial will follow in the Resthaven Memory Gardens with Military Graveside Rites by the Highland County Honor Guard.
Friends may call on Sunday afternoon from 2:00 till 5:00 P.M. at the Thompson Funeral Home.
