George R. Powell, 78 years of Hillsboro, died Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at Heartland of Hillsboro.
George was born May 25, 1933 in Oregonia, OH, son of the late Erby and Mary Steffy Powell. Beside his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Adeline Powell, three brothers, James, Tommy and Carroll Powell.
George retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service, serving during the Korean Conflict and two tours of duty in Viet-Nam. He was a member of the VFW Post # 9094, Hillsboro and a member of the Hillsboro Freewill Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Agnes Hollaris Powell, two daughters and son-in-law, Mary and Mark Tassell of Loveland, OH., Diane Elam of Oregonia, OH., one son, Erby Powell of Cincinnati, OH., two step daughters and step son-in-laws, Charlotte and Mark Willett of West Union, OH., Cynthia and Gary Purdin of Hillsboro, OH., one step son, Steven Nash of Cookeville, TN., five brothers, Herbert Powell of Otway, OH., Edwin Powell of Monterey, TN., Elijah Powell of Knoxville, TN., Johnny Powell, Tim Powell of Lebanon, OH., one sister, Marjorie Reed of Hillsboro, OH., 13 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Friday, July 15, 2011 at the Hillsboro Freewill Baptist Church, 6360 U.S. 50 West, Hillsboro, OH..
Rev. Richard Burns will officiate with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Highland County Honor Guard to follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens.
Friends may call from 12:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M. Friday at the Hillsboro Freewill Baptist Church.
