James L. Charles, 80 years of Fayetteville, died Sunday, September 1, 2002 at the Select Specialty in Columbus.
He was born in Adams County, Ohio on August 21, 1922 the son of the late Colin and Alta Smith Charles.
He was a U.S. Marines Veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Ohio Education Association, the National Education Association, the Highland Chapter of Ohio Retired Teachers Association, the Brown County Shrine Club, Georgetown American Legion Post #180, Masonic Lodge #631 of Columbus, Ohio, Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton, and the Syrian Temple of Cincinnati.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Education from the University of Dayton in 1953, and with a Masters of Education from Xavier University in 1967. He owned and operated a restaurant on Brown Street in Dayton, which established a co-op program so employees could get a college education. He was the State Director of The National Right to Read Foundation, and served as President of the Ohio Reading Reform Foundation. In 1985 he served on Senator Zorinsky?s Committee to establish a National Commission on Illiteracy. He was the author of the Phonics Section of Seante Bill 140, lobbied it through the House and Senate, and it was signed into Law in July of 1989. He retired from Princeton City Schools.
Beside his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Juanita Barton, Rhea Shields, and two brothers, Marlyn Charles, and Kenneth Charles.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Shields Charles of Fayetteville, who he married on May 21, 1955, brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Viola Riley of Hillsboro, sister-in-law, Margie Charles of Greenfield, and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2002 at 2:00 P.M. at the Fayetteville Church of Christ with Sherman Mullett officiating.
