Jerry D. Greene

July 15, 1934 — February 5, 2016

Jerry D. Greene, 81 years of Hillsboro passed away Friday, February 5, 2016 at his residence.

Jerry was born July 15, 1934 in Concord Township, Highland County, OH, the son of the late Thurman and Helen (Dick) Greene.

Jerry was a graduate of Hillsboro High School, served his country in the US Navy and retired from the USPS in Hillsboro where served as a Rural Mail Carrier.

Jerry had a long, wonderful life, replete with many hobbies, passions, and loves. His woodcarvings could only be described as masterful, his wooden decoys known around the state and beyond. He had a passion for all things wood related-collecting antique planes and levels and his fair share of power equipment-and he loved to teach his three grandsons, Andrew, Ryan, and Tyler, whatever they would hold still long enough to learn. He also loved to peruse the Springfield and Burlington Antique Shows for antique finds-wood related and otherwise.

In addition to woodworking, Jerry had a lifelong love of reading, history and biography books in particular. He most enjoyed reading about Thomas Jefferson and other presidents; his voracious reading appetite meant no book was too big. When he wasn't in his chair reading or out in his wood shop, Jerry enjoyed watching sports. He was a lifelong Ohio State Buckeyes fan and was very proud when his grandchildren Kelsey and Tyler went on to matriculate at the school. He also watched the Cincinnati Reds his entire life-but whether or not he would call himself a fan would depend on the day. He would often threaten to renounce his loyalty if they didn't get their act together!

But if all those activities were pursuits that Jerry enjoyed, watching his grandchildren grow up was what he truly loved. His grandchildren Andrew and Ryan Marler and Kelsey and Tyler Bick and great grandchild, Kash, were the lights of his life. It didn't matter the sport-soccer, cross country, track, baseball, or basketball-Jerry was their biggest fan and attended an event whenever he could. He was also so proud of what his grandchildren achieved in the arts. Whether it was piano, choir, band, theatre, or dance, Jerry would beam with joy at their accomplishments and performances. He grew ever prouder as his grandchildren went on to college and beyond-Andrew following in Jerry's footsteps to join the Navy and make us aa prouder than we knew we could be; Ryan going to school to achieve his dream of flying, Papa tracking his movements across country; Kelsey moving to Columbus to chase her dreams of editing; and Tyler making us all proud as webmaster at Southern State Community College.

All of this would not have been possible without Jerry's wife of 55 years, Beverly (Davis) Greene that were united in marriage on April 29, 1960 and who survives. He is also survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Kurt Marler, Sharon and Mike Bick both of Hillsboro; four grandchildren, Andrew (Ashley) Marler, Kelsey Bick, Ryan (Ashley) Marler, Tyler Bick; one great grandson T. Kash Marler; one brother and sister-in-law Richard "Pete" and Marjorie Greene of Hillsboro; dear friend Trong Lee.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at the Thompson Funeral Home in Hillsboro with Pastor Lloyd Shoemaker officiating.

Burial will follow in the New Market Baptist Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Highland County Honor Guard.

Friends may call Tuesday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Thompson Funeral Home.
