John R. Cowne

John R. Cowne, 84 years of Hillsboro, died Tuesday, May 11, 2004 at the Heartland of Hillsboro.

He was born in Highland County, Ohio on February 26, 1920 the son of the late Ruben S. and Mae E. Tucker Cowne.

During World War II, he served in Company C, 159th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, for the United States Army in the Aleutian Islands. He retired May 31, 1985 as a Claims Administrator for the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services after thirty-seven years of service. He was a member of the VFW, Public Employee Retirees, Inc., and the Senior Citizens Center.

Beside his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Joanna Shelton Cowne, who passed away December 31, 2000, and sister, Maxine Collins.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary L. and Patricia A. Cowne of London, Ohio, Stephen M. and Euvona Cowne of Dothan, Alabama, two grandsons, Stephen M. Cowne, Jr. and Colin E. Cowne of Ramseur, North Carolina, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Charlotte and David McElhaney of Coshocton, Ohio, mother-in-law, Evelyn Holladay Shelton of Hillsboro, brother-in-law, Bill Collins of Greenfield, and nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at the Prospect Cemetery with John Porter officiating. Burial will follow in the Prospect Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Hope Miller-Thompson Funeral Home in Hillsboro is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Oncology Department at Highland District Hospital, 1275 N. High Street, Hillsboro, OH 45133.
