Laura McKee Garrett of Hillsboro died Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at Heartland of Hillsboro.
Born in Russellville, Oklahoma on April 25, 1933, she was the daughter of Joseph Elmer and Tressa Graham McKee. Preceded in death by her parents and infant daughter, Debra Suzanne Garrett, she is survived by a son, Joseph F.
Garrett and his wife, Anne, of Baldwin, Maryland; sisters, Wanda Crump and her husband, Owen, of Crosbyton, Texas; and Helen Hiestand and her husband, Ed, of Hillsboro, Ohio. Laura is also survived by nieces and nephews whom she cherished.
Laura, affectionately known as "Dodie," was passionate about her faith, family, children, and caring for others. She achieved a life-long dream of a career in nursing, graduating from North Harris Community College in Houston, Texas with a degree in Vocational Nursing. She was employed with Health South until her retirement in 2003. Her nieces, nephews, and their families were like her own, and she was devoted to them.
Recently transferring her membership to Hillsboro First United Methodist Church, her faith was at the core of her being. She was dedicated student of Bible study, while sharing and living her faith. She was a dedicated volunteer with Our Daily Bread, a member of the Monday Morning Bible Study, and the 9AM Circle Group at Hillsboro First UMC.
In keeping with her wishes, her remains have been donated to the Ohio State University School of Medicine in Columbus, Ohio.
A memorial service celebrating Laura's life will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Hillsboro with Dr. Derek Russell officiating.
Thompson Funeral Services in Hillsboro is serving the family.
