Leon Cudkowicz

Dr. Leon Cudkowicz of Highland, Ohio passed away at Clinton Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, August 22. He was born in Lodz, Poland on January 18, 1923, the son of Mauryce and Masza Cudkowicz nee alinsky.
He emigrated to London in 1938, and enrolled in Birckbeck College. He received his education at the University of London, earning his BS in 1946 and his MD from the King's College Hospital in 1951. His MD thesis was on the Bronchial Circulation in Man, which remained a major professional interest throughout his career. The thesis earned the Sir Charlton Briscoe prize for medical research. During this time, he also served as Captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps 6th BMH, BAOR at Wheatley Military Hospital, Oxford, England from 1946-49. He received the MRCP from the Royal College of Physicians in London in Internal Medicine in 1954. From 1956-58 he was the James Hudson Fellow at the Yale University School of Medicine. He received further postgraduate training at Harvard Medical School in 1958.Dr. Cudkowicz had a distinguished academic career in medicine, specializing in cardiology, the bronchial circulation, and pulmonary effects of high altitude. He joined the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University, Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1960, and became Professor of Medicine at Jefferson Medical College in Philadephia, PA in 1970, where he served as Chief of Cardio-Pulmonary Services. He was awarded the Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1973. Dr. Cudkowicz moved to Wright State University in 1975 where he served as Chair of Cardiology until 1977. From 1978-81 he was Chairman and Professor and Director of Clinical Services at King Faisal University in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. He was a Professor of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati from 1981 until his retirement in 1992. During his career he performed research on high altitude effects at the Instituto Boliviano de Altura in La Paz, Bolivia. He authored the text Human Bronchial Circulation and published over 107 papers in professional journals, and his research garnered a number of awards including Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Medical Association Physicians Recognition Award in 1980 and a fellowship in high altitude research from the Organization of American States at La Paz in 1982.
Dr. Cudkowicz had a wide range of interests including mountains, literature, music, and sailing.
He is survived by his wife Teresa and his brothers-in-law Juan and Wigberto Alfaro and sister-in-law Elsa de Lopez and their families in Bolvia. He is also survived by his first wife Margaret and their two children: Alexander Cudkowicz lives in Colorado with his wife Kathy Cottrell and children Erica, Bruce, and Gwendolyn; Penelope lives in Michigan with husband Ted Norris and their daughter Jessica. Besides his parents, Dr. Cudkowicz was proceeded in death by his brother Hermann and sister-in law Erica.
Family and friends are invited to attend an open house and service at their home, Yonder Hill Farm, 11955 State Rte. 72, Highland, OH, on Saturday, August 25 at 2 PM. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery at 4 PM.
