Mary Hiestand

March 11, 1916 — May 24, 2013

Mary Custer Hiestand, 97, died at her Hillsboro home on Thursday, May 23, 2013.

Mary Roselyn Custer was born in Jeffersonville, Ohio in 1916, the third of six children born to Paris and Della Mae Straley Custer. She was a graduate of Jeffersonville High School and Wilmington College.

In 1938, Mary married Joseph F. Hiestand, establishing their residence on the historical Hiestand family farm on the outskirts of Hillsboro. During WWII, military service relocated the family to Moultrie, Georgia and Ft. Myers, Florida. Returning to Hillsboro after the War, Mary began a career in teaching. She took a sabbatical in 1959, returning to Wilmington College to complete her Baccalaureate degree, graduating Cum Laude. Her teaching career began in Lynchburg, closed with Hillsboro City Schools, and spanned 25 years in elementary education.

Mary was intensely interested in historical preservation, and was member of the Highland County Historical Society. She lent her enthusiasm and involvement in the restoration of the Scott House, championed the Bicentennial celebrations of America, the Constitution, and the City of Hillsboro. Her membership and leadership in the Waw-wil-away Chapter of the DAR fostered a life long interest in genealogy.

Varied interests continued well into retirement. Mary was a member of the Hillsboro First United Methodist Church, American Association of University Women AAUW, Hillsboro Retired Teachers Association, a member of Towne Club, and an avid bridge player. In 1999, Mary was inducted into the Highland County Women's Hall of Fame, and was recognized as Hillsboro Citizen of the Month.

Predeceased by her husband, Joseph F. Hiestand and daughter, Linda Dennis Harvey, she is survived by a son, Ed Hiestand and wife Helen, and daughter, Marilyn Hiestand all of Hillsboro; grandchildren, Susan Dennis of Batavia; Joe Hiestand and wife, Moira, of Columbus, Jason Dennis and wife Nicole, of Bellbrook, Janis and Mike Halteman of Columbus, and Rebecca Sexton of Kettering. Also surviving are great grandchildren Drew and Cara Hiestand, Greer, Laurel and Halle Dennis, Avery Halteman, and Savannah and Kennedy Sexton. Mary is also survived by her sister, Martha Custer Hickle of Roswell, GA.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 31 at 11:00 am at First United Methodist Church, 133 East Walnut Street in Hillsboro. Dr. Derek Russell will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Hospice of Hope, 215 Hughes Blvd, Mt. Orab, OH 45154.
