Mary Ellen Lynch, 89 years, of Wilmington, DE and formerly of Hillsboro, OH died December 16, 2011 at the Compassionate Care Hospice unit of the Saint Francis Hospital in Wilmington, DE.
She was born on January 12, 1922 in Barkhamstead, CT the daughter of the late Adam and Catherine Zbusko Lomnicky. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her brothers Albert, Joseph, and Jules Lomnicky and her husband Thomas J. Lynch Jr.
Mary worked as the Office Manager for Dr. Messina in Hillsboro for many years. Prior to that she worked as Secretary for Dr. Espelita, and was the Administrative Assistant to the President of Wilmington College, Wilmington, OH. After graduating from Canton High School, Canton, CT, she worked at Colt Patent Firearms in Hartford, CT during World War II. During the war she also worked as a professional photographer.
Mary had a life-long passion for her family and gardening, and was an avid bridge player. She was active in Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Hillsboro, the Rosary Altar Society, and bible study groups. She held various offices in the Hillsboro Emblem Club and was an active member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, the Hillsboro Mother's Club, Hillsboro Garden Club, Highland County Historical Society, Highland County Senior Citizens Center, Hillsboro Pool Association, and was a Girl Scout, Brownie, and Cub Scout leader.
Mary particularly enjoyed many US and foreign trips with her friends, hosted by the Highland County Senior Citizens Center. She was the first resident of the Lilly Hill Condominium complex.
On May 24, 1947 she was united in marriage to Thomas J. Lynch Jr., in New Harford, CT. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Marjorie Lynch, of Westminster, MA, and her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Thomas Hodges, of Hockessin, DE; four grandchildren, Thomas and Bradford Lynch, Kate Harmon, and Thomas Hodges; nieces Irene Allyn and Eleanor Dewey; nephews Robert and Donald Lomnicky.
Mary enjoyed many life-long friends in the Hillsboro area. During the last year of her life, Mary moved to the Lorelton Assisted Living Facility in Wilmington, DE to be closer to her children and grandchildren. She made many friends there and enjoyed wonderful outings with her daughter, Susan and her son-in-law, Tom.
A funeral mass will be celebrated by Father Mike Paraniuk at Saint Mary's Catholic Church on Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at 10:00 A.M.. Prior to the service there will be a viewing at the church for friends beginning at 9:00 A.M. Burial will be at the Saint Mary's Cemetery next to her beloved husband, Tom. A reception for friends and relatives will be held at the Church Hall following the burial ceremony.
