Ralph Barrett ?Pat? Smith as born in Marshall Township on December 28, 1927, the son of W.A. ?Bert? Smith and Doris Barrett Smith.
He graduated from Marshall High School in 1945, the valedictorian of his class. Shortly afterward he served his country by enlisting in the U.S. Navy. Upon returning home, he engaged in a large farming operation with his father on a farm which had been in the Barrett Family for many years located in Marshall Township. He was a prominent and well respected farmer in the area.
He held leadership positions in the local Producers Livestock Association, and the State Producers Association as well as the Highland County Landmark and the Farm Bureau. He served on the original Highland County Water Board when the water system for Highland County as being implemented.
He was a faithful member of the Marshall United Methodist Church serving as Lay Leader, Sunday School Superintendent, Trustee, many Committees and in many other capacities as needed.
He was a 50 year member of the Sinking Spring Masonic Lodge #365, Hillsboro Chapter #40 Royal Arch Masons, Hillsboro Council #16 Royal & Select Masons, Highland Commandery #31 Knights Templar, a demitted member of Hillsboro Order of Eastern Star #441 and a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Cincinnati.
He was a rural mail carrier out of the Hillsboro Post Office for 38 years and made many friends along the way with his jovial manner.
He is survived by his mother, Doris B. Smith. His father passed away on April 7, 1992.
He is also survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Madonna Murphy Smith, one daughter, Marty Clark of San Diego, CA., two sons, David Barrett Janice Smith of Hillsboro and Barry A. Smith of Cincinnati; four grandchildren, Hannah Chad Harmon, Corrie Clark, Kelsey Clark and Matthew Smith; three step grandchildren, Kerri Mark Middleton, Todd Magee and Adam Magee; four step great grandchildren; three sisters, Beverly Clifford Fenner of Hillsboro, Aileen Paul Githens of Richmond, IN., Jeanette Williamson of Keokuk, IA.; brother-in-law, Allen Barbara Murphy of Hillsboro; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation will be held on Sunday afternoon from 2:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M. at the Hope Miller-Thompson Funeral Home. Private Services will be held Monday at the Convenience of the Family.
