Robert Gene "Bob" Ray, 89 years of Hillsboro, passed away on Sunday December 3, 2023.
He was born in Fayette County on May 8, 1934, the son of the late Ralph and Alma (Halterman) Ray. Besides his parents, he is also preceded by his sister, Carol McCullah and brothers, Dick and Howard Ray.
After graduating from Mt. Sterling High School, he went to work for Robertshaw Control for a short period and he was drafted into the United States Army. Upon returning from the military, he worked for Hobart for several years and went to work for General Electric, in Cincinnati, where he retired. After retirement, Bob worked as a courier for 5/3 Bank.
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Gene "Bob" Ray, a beloved member of our community and an extraordinary individual who lived a life filled with selflessness, dedication, and unwavering kindness. Known for his commitment to service and his humble spirit, Bob's departure leaves an indelible void in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege to know him.
Bob grew on the family farm, where he learned the values of hard work, resilience, and the importance of community. In his youth, Bob dedicated himself to serving his country and enlisted in the Army, proudly defending the ideals and freedoms he held dear.
Upon returning home, Bob continued his life of service, becoming a dedicated volunteer EMT to the Brush Creek Township Life Squad and an assistant Fire Chief of the Brush Creek Fire Department . From battling wildfires to saving lives, Bob's bravery and commitment to his community was unmatched. Through his selfless actions, he became a symbol of hope and strength, inspiring others to join him in his noble pursuits.
In addition to his firefighting and life squad duties, Bob was an active member of the Maggie's coffee club, where he formed lifelong friendships and shared countless heartwarming moments over a cup of joe. He was a familiar face on the sidelines of his grandchildren's sporting events, cheering them on with enthusiasm and unconditional love.
Beyond his dedication to service, Bob was a loving, father, grandfather, and friend. His warm smile, genuine kindness, and sage advice touched the lives of everyone he encountered. Bob will forever be remembered for his unwavering integrity, his ability to find joy in the simplest of moments, and his unwavering commitment to making the world a better place.
Bob is survived by his daughters, Kimberly "Kim" (Doug) McFarland of Peebles and Michelle (Jay) Buten of Cincinnati, grandchildren, Drew (Morgan) McFarland, Alexandra (Tylar) Adkins, Aubrey McFarland, Mallory (Brandon) Rothel, Holly (Nick) Nelson and Lindsay (Foster) Martin, great grandchildren, Bryce Nelson, Maverick McFarland, Raeleigh McFarland and Cohen Adkins, brother, Max Ray of Columbus and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
Graveside Service with Military Rites will be held at the Locust Grove Cemetery at the convivence of the family, in the care of Thompson Funeral Home in Hillsboro, Ohio.
