Vincent L. Golden, 83, of Hillsboro, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008 at the Highland District Hospital.
He was born in Adams County on Aug. 9, 1924, the son of the late Howard Golden and Grace Parks McCoppin.
He was a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II, where he received the distinguished awards of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star after serving on the battlefields of Iwo Jima, Guam and Bougainville. He was a lifetime member of the Third Marine Division, and a lifetime member of the Hillsboro V.F.W. Post #9094. He was a 1942 graduate of Hillsboro High School. He retired in 1989 after 35 years of service as a surveyor and supervisor for the Ohio Department of Transportation. He was a member of the Hillsboro First Baptist Church, where he was an elder and taught Sunday School; Wednesday morning men's share group; Little League baseball coach from 1950-78; volunteered at Hills and Dales from 1989-2004; and trained bird dogs and participated in bird dog trials for much of his life. He was also a 50-year member of the Highland Lodge #38 F.&A.M., Hillsboro Council #16 R.&S.M., Hillsboro Chapter #40 R.A.M., Highland Commandery #31 Knights Templar, and Scottish Rite Valley of Cincinnati.
He was united in marriage on Aug. 19, 1950 to Juanita L. Shaffer Golden, who passed away on Aug. 7, 1999. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Howard Golden and Grace Parks McCoppin, and two sisters, Bonnie McCoppin and Nancy O'Cull.
He was united in marriage on April 4, 2000 to Dorothy Ellis Golden, who survives. He is also survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Ken Boatman of Hillsboro, Judy and Dave Hamilton of Pricetown, three step-sons, Steve Wilma Shearer of Winchester, Jim Joan Drummond of Peebles, Tim Shearer of Fredrickstown, five grandchildren, Lori Brian Roush, Brad Boatman, Karie Steve Emery, J.D. Melanie Hamilton, and Joni Bobby Layne, six great-grandchildren, Ryan Emery, Justin Emery, Kyler Emery, Carson Emery, Halle Hamilton and Hannah Hamilton, numerous step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Jan. 11, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Hillsboro First Baptist Church with Rev. Todd Toole and Rev. Larry W. Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in Hillsboro Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Highland County Honor Guard.
Friends may call on Thursday, Jan. 10 from 5-8 p.m. at the Hillsboro First Baptist Church.
