Walter R. Reffitt, 82 years of Hillsboro, died Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at Highland District Hospital.
He was born in Montgomery County, Kentucky on November 11, 1925 the son of the late Ott and Bethel Willoughby Reffitt, Sr.
Walt was chief of police of Hillsboro from 1950 to 1955 and worked for Columbus and Southern Ohio for two years. He was elected sheriff of Highland County in 1957 and was re-elected four more terms for a total of twenty years. After thirteen years as a security guard at Cincinnati Milacron Afton and Mt. Orab plants, he retired in 1991.
He is survived by his wife Katherine "Kate" Deakyne Reffitt of sixty three years, three daughters and sons-in-law Judy and Wirt Barrera of Thornville, Ohio, Stella and David Jobe of Centerville, Georgia, Jane and Larry Sowers of Columbus, Ohio, six grandchildren, Rick Cindy Barrera of Somerset, Ohio, Lisa Tom Woods of Columbus, Ohio, Kim Ron Dodson of Jackson, Georgia, Kathy Chuck Howard of Hiram, Georgia, Scott Rapp of Byron, Georgia, Shannon Ken Spencer of Columbus, Ohio, and seventeen great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was a special grandpa to his nephew Doug's children, Ryan and Hailey. Walt shared a close bond with Doug Angela Reffitt, whom he thought of as his son.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his younger brothers, Bill, Cliff, Ott, Jr., Orville and Clyde and his sister, Marjorie.
Walt was a member of the Hillsboro Church of Christ, Highland Lodge #38 F.&A.M. fifty years, the Scottish Rite Valley of Cincinnati, the Fraternal Order of Police and the Buckeye State Sheriffs' Association. He may be remembered by his campaign slogan of the fifties, "A friendly country boy willing to serve the county people" and that he did.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 21, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. at the Thompson Funeral Home in Hillsboro with John Porter officiating. Burial will follow in Hillsboro Cemetery.
Friends may call on Sunday from 2:00 till 4:00 P.M. at the Thompson Funeral Home, with Masonic Services at 4:00 P.M. on Sunday followed by the Scottish Rite and F.O.P. Services.
